We all know the devastating effects of not having enough sleep at night. We tend to be hungrier, less focused, and crankier in the morning that we swear not to deprive ourselves of sleep ever again.
Despite knowing the negative effects of a poor night’s sleep, many busy people sleep for 6 hours or less a night. Indeed, getting a good night’s sleep has become the least of their priorities.
Recently, Bensons for Beds led a study to investigate the effect of sleep deprivation on one’s appearance. To find out the consequences of a poor night’s sleep, researchers examined the skin of 30 female participants including UK celebrity and supermodel Jodie Kidd.
The participants, who slept for 8 hours the night before they were examined, were asked to sleep for six hours for the next five nights. The researchers then measured the number of pores, wrinkles, red areas, fine lines, and brown spots using a Visia machine.
The results of study revealed how much sleep deprivation ages an individual’s appearance. After five days of not getting enough sleep, wrinkles and fine lines increased by 45%, while the number of red areas on the skin increased by 8% on the skin of participants. Meanwhile, brown spots increased by 11% and the number bacteria on their skin increased on the average by 16%.
Spot the difference.
As for Jodie, who juggles her showbiz work with being a full-time mom, sleeping less than the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep at night has become quite common for her. But after seeing the huge difference in terms of her physical appearance, Jodie is determined to make a lifestyle change.
“Having seen the really quite significant effects of just five nights of six hours sleep, I realise that rest is an important part of it. After taking part in this study with Bensons for Beds I will certainly be paying more attention to my routine and prioritising getting a good night’s sleep.”
