Do female coffee-lovers need to worry about their breast size?
A study conducted from Lund University in Sweden revealed that drinking at least three cups of coffee daily may reduce a woman’s breast size.
To investigate the link between coffee intake and smaller breast size, the researchers led by Helena Jernstrom surveyed 269 women. They obtained their bust measurements as well as the number of cups of coffee they drink everyday.
“Drinking coffee can have a major effect on breast size,Coffee-drinking women do not have to worry their breasts will shrink to nothing overnight. They will get smaller, but the breasts aren’t just going to disappear,” said Jernstrom.
The researchers explained that the effect of coffee on breast size may be attributed to the fact that coffee contains compounds that influences hormone activity. Aside from caffeine, coffee is rich in phytoestrogens, which blocks estrogen receptors in breasts.
Estrogen, which is responsible for breast tissue growth and development, will be inhibited from doing its job by phytoestrogens. Thus, the more coffee a woman drinks, the smaller her breasts get.
Coffee Lowers Risk of Breast Cancer
Now that scientists have established the link between coffee and shrinking breasts, many women may opt to ditch drinking coffee.
In a separate study conducted by researchers from the Lund University, it was revealed that drinking two cups of coffee daily may reduce the risk of the recurrence of breast cancer.
Their findings revealed that the intake of cancer-killing drug tamoxifen and two cups of coffee daily reduced the risk of tumours returning by 50% among women recovering from breast cancer.
“The study also shows that those who drank at least two cups of coffee a day had smaller tumours and a lower proportion of hormone-dependent tumours. We saw that this was already the case at the time of diagnosis,” said Ann Rosendahl, a researcher from Lund University.
