Do you think that working for your bad boss is making you sick? Well, you may be just right.
According to Quartz, a study revealed that working for a bad boss can make employees sick. What’s even worse, a bad boss is even more harmful than passive smoking.
Some of the medical conditions associated with working for a bad boss are: headaches, weight gain, insomnia, increased blood pressure, heart disease and a lower life expectancy. What’s even sadder is about 75% of employees consider themselves to be working for a bad boss and about 59% stay in a hostile workplace.
Why do they tolerate such unfriendly work environment? Dr Hernshaw says that these mean bosses actually hypnotize their subordinates to tolerate their bad behavior. Employees actually start to believe in what their bosses say which makes even harder for them to leave their jobs.
Moreover, researchers from the Harvard Business School and Stanford University revealed that losing a job can likely cause one to experience poor health by 50% and a demanding job makes one likely to be diagnosed with an illness by 35%. This was concluded from more than 200 studies related to the effects of stress in the workplace. And as an employee stays longer with a bad boss, the more detrimental it is to one’s health.
So how do you identify a bad boss? While some bosses are just a little critical, bad bosses are overly aggressive, narcissistic and can also be violent at times. They belittle their subordinates, are short-tempered and have unreasonable expectations. Try to identify if your boss is one and check if it really is taking a toll on you. And if it does, it maybe time to go.
