If you can go anywhere you can imagine, where would you go?
The search giant Google is about to take students anywhere in the world or even the universe with the new device called the Expedition VR system, a special virtual reality system based on on Google’s Cardboard VR headset. Google worked with GoPro to come up with the 360 camera system.
The Expedition kit comes with a phone and a cardboard headset to be used in virtual school trips.
So how exactly does this device take you to places beyond your imagination?
Each student will be given a kit they can use, while the teacher controls the virtual reality experience using a tablet. A special app developed by Google allows viewers to see 3d images and videos. Learning is made easier if students get to experience “being” in the Great Wall of China or the Great Pyramids of Egypt rather than reading descriptions on the book or seeing their pictures.
It also allows them to go places they can only imagine such asthe surface of moon or underwater. Through Expedition, students get to have a “deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom.”
Google said: “Field trips are a great way for teachers to engage students and give them a first hand understanding of a subject — but they’re not always practical or even possible.”
“Expeditions allows teachers to make their curriculum come alive by taking their students on field trips to almost anywhere they can imagine.”
Google is hoping that the virtual reality device will be used in schools. The company has already partnered with several museums and experts including the Chateau de Versailles, the Planetary Society, Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History.
